TikTok Transcription Not Working: Common Causes

Transcription problems split into two groups: the upload never completes, or it completes and the text is wrong. They are worth diagnosing separately.
Quick answer
For failed uploads, check the format (MP4, MOV, WEBM, MP3, WAV, M4A) and keep the file under the size limit — converting to MP3 usually solves both. For poor text, the cause is almost always background music or overlapping voices.
When the upload fails
- Unsupported format: MKV, AVI and FLV are not accepted — convert first.
- File too large: audio-only MP3 is a fraction of the size of the same clip as video.
- Connection dropped mid-upload: retry on a stable network.
- Zero-byte or partially downloaded file: play it locally to confirm it is intact.
When the text is inaccurate
Speech recognition struggles with loud music beds, several people talking at once, very fast delivery and invented brand names. None of that is fixable at upload time, which is why the transcript is editable — correct the handful of wrong words and every export reflects the fix.
Improving the odds
- Upload the audio rather than the video where you can.
- Trim silent or musical intros before uploading.
- For your own content, record voiceovers separately from the music.
