Video Formats Explained: MP4, MOV, WEBM and Friends

Format confusion usually comes from mixing up two separate things: the container that holds the video, and the codec used to compress what is inside it. Once those are separated, the rest is straightforward.
Quick answer
MP4 is the safest container for anything you want to keep and share. MOV is Apple's near-identical equivalent, and WEBM is a web-oriented container that some devices do not play.
Containers
- MP4: universally supported, the default for TikTok and almost every phone.
- MOV: Apple's container, technically very close to MP4; fine on Macs and iPhones.
- WEBM: royalty-free and common on the web; support outside browsers is patchy.
- MKV: flexible and popular for archives, but rejected by many upload forms.
Codecs
- H.264 (AVC): the compatibility champion, used by TikTok.
- H.265 (HEVC): smaller files at the same quality, with more licensing friction.
- AV1: efficient and open, but slower to decode on older hardware.
- AAC and Opus: the usual audio codecs found alongside them.
What this means for your downloads
TikTok downloads arrive as MP4 with H.264 and AAC, which is the most portable combination available. Leave it alone unless a specific editor demands something else — every conversion is another generation of quality loss.
Bitrate and resolution
Resolution is the pixel count; bitrate is how much data per second is spent describing them. A 1080p clip at a low bitrate can look worse than a well-encoded 720p one, which is why re-encoding a downloaded video usually makes it look softer, never sharper.
